Round 3 Question & Responses
Q: Describe shooting the scene
A: This was a very challenging assigment to try and pull off with only 10 days, but I am blessed to be surrounded by a number of talented people who were willing to help me out. Kudos to my terrific actress Suthi Tenderfoot, my ever talented DP Robert Flowers, and all the help and support from Karen Warzecha, Courtney Mccrory, Ian Jameson, and Haik Katsikian. The scene was all shot hand held on a consumer grade DV Camera on Sunday December 17th. The sound was recorded in camera which proved to be a tough hurdle when designing the sound in post. I chose the first scene because I loved the idea of having to communicate what is being said on the other line through only reactions. The biggest challenge in bringing this scene to life was fleshing out Rebecca's back story and relationship with the caller having no knowledge of the greater context to which this scene belongs in (I don't know if the feature script is floating around, and I just haven't seen it). So we invented our own to optimize the turning point in the conversation. This is the first time that I have directed from a script that I haven't been involved with from it's creation. But it was kind of liberating to be able to just focus on the interpretation of the material. I can't thank everyone enough for all of their support. I would still be working on this right now, but my DP is telling me it's time to post. What is that Pixar saying? "Films are never finished. They are just released." Well this was a fun, and challenging project to be sure.
