Remake suggestion: When that time comes take the same script, change absolutely nothing, and have each character played by clowns.

Four couples that have been friends since college get together every year in a vacation spot of their choosing to work on their relationships and help strengthen the bonds. This time the group chooses a spot in the snowy mountains of Colorado, and for the sake of entertainment, it'll be the year the excrement hits the proverbial fan. Tyler Perry (writer/producer/director/star) best known in the cinematic world for his comedy, has recently been dabbling in the dramatic with his previous entry of Daddy's Little Girl, and now this. Still, he shows that he's not yet ready to give up on praising the lord, or slapping people over the head with jokes.
Why Did I Get Married? Is “all over the place,” for lack of a better expression. It's an attempt at intimate drama packed in with situations that are very strained and often very unrealistic. We're introduced to our characters, couple by couple as they're on their way to this retreat. This is the first glimpse we get at our folks, first chance to see what's in store for us, and time to get an idea of their "conflicts." Alcoholic Angela (Smith) and ex-football pro Marcus (White) have themselves a one-sided shouting match on a packed train which eventually riles up the less than original gay couple (complete with Chihuahua "Fifi") behind them in an exchange that must have been intended for some other film. Sheila (Scott) and husband Mike (Jones) along with friend Trina (Boutte) have their bout on a boarding plane in an situation that had me thinking the characters AND dialogue were lifted from separate pieces and spliced together here. Sheila, a character meant to be heartwarming and felt sorry for, cannot end up in our minds as anything but plain dumb. Incidentally, for those familiar with Perry, Sheila gives a few shout outs to God, but is the only participant.
He's to be given credit for veering away from that alter ego of his (the larger than life Madea) and the style of film he's most comfortable with, but the characters here are very simple and not all that interesting. Take one-note characters, give them realistic enough struggles, and then "Tylerize" them. There's an attempt here to build an intimate setting as each duo plows through whatever troubles them, but the only truly engaging… and realistic moments come from the group scenes. Particularly the ones that feature the "guys" just sitting around taking shots at each other and talking guy stuff. They flow as the characters just bounce stuff around, they have fun, and it provides some genuine laughs. It's in those that you'll also find the best camera work as you're easily lead around the table as to not miss a thing.
Otherwise you've got dragged out telegraphed moments filling time until someone can get a bottle broken over their head.
The cast has its moments, but for the most part each character sticks with whatever word they've associated to themselves throughout. Tasha Smith has some fun playing "angry," although it gets to be too much. Perry allows himself the most range, and aside from an shoddy opening scene, does well with what he's given himself. Janet Jackson stands out from the crowd firmly proving that she has absolutely no acting ability whatsoever. I held out hope that a nipple would make an appearance just so that she could be a part of something interesting. Janet, you go girl. And don't come back.
Why Did I Get Married? Is more or less a soap opera with one note characters and forced issues, and some humorous scenes sprinkled throughout Add on half a star (or something) if you're married.
